Karl "Moonshine" Krekeler
The Vinatge Game
Lafayette Park
St. Louis Perfectos Base Ball Club
Team president, most improved ballist and all-around good guy. Those are
terms which can describe Karl "Moonshine" Krekeler. A solid tender or
short scout, Krekeler was named the most improved ballist for the 2007
season. An energetic young player, Krekeler hopes to inject some young
enthusiasm into the club with his role as team president for the 2008
season. "I love the fact that there are so many people dedicated to the
game and that there are  so many teams in the Midwest and around the
country that play the same 'antiquated' game that we do," Moonshine said.
"People are always surprised that we can play against lots of other teams. I
like fitting my game into this version of the game." St. Louis native Krekeler
first saw the Perfectos play the St. Louis Unions in University City during
2006. During the event, Krekeler talked with umpire Rick "Righteous
Richard" Rea about joining the team. Moonshine did just that, becoming a
member of the Perfectos midway through the 2006 season. "As I tell
everyone who asks me why I play vintage base ball, anyone can play
softball," Karl said. "This is more fun, more challenging and much more
unique. I wouldn't trade the experience I've had the last two years for
anything." In his short stint with the club, Krekeler has made some
memorable plays, such as catching a line drive off his foot at Martinsburg
during August of 2007. That Krekeler has become a solid player is
something he never figured would happen. "I played up to sixth grade, then I
became afraid of the ball," Krekeler said. There have been many highlights
over the past couple of seasons. "Learning how to play baseball the way it
used to be played," Krekeler said. "Winning the Missouri Cup, playing in the
Ohio Cup, being voted Most Improved Ballist in 2007, and being elected
president for 2008 have been among the highlights." Krekeler feels
Lafayette Park is the perfect place for the vintage game. "The park has so
much character, and it feels like you've been transported back to the 1860s,
since you can't really see the streets," Moonshine said. "The cranks make
the game more fun to play because they want to learn about the game and
really enjoy themselves." Other than Lafayette Park, Krekeler has favorite
venues at traditional and new locations. "I enjoyed Muffin Meadow (at the
Ohio Village in Columbus, Ohio)," Krekeler said. "I also like the field in
Martinsburg with the fire house in the right garden. That is fun."
